{"id":6721,"date":"2024-10-21T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.lucianoberio.org\/dialogues-luciano-berios-sequenzas-cycle\/"},"modified":"2024-10-30T16:56:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T15:56:31","slug":"dialogues-luciano-berios-sequenzas-cycle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.lucianoberio.org\/en\/dialogues-luciano-berios-sequenzas-cycle\/","title":{"rendered":"Dialogues: Luciano Berio&#8217;s Sequenzas cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the 2023 edition of the Darmst\u00e4dter Ferienkurse (Darmstadt Summer Course), a workshop was held on Berio\u2019s <em>Sequenzas I<\/em>, <em>II<\/em> and <em>XIV<\/em>, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/internationales-musikinstitut.de\/de\/ferienkurse\/ueber\/musiker-dozenten\/de-benedictis\/\">Angela Ida De Benedictis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/internationales-musikinstitut.de\/de\/ferienkurse\/ueber\/musiker-dozenten\/claire-chase\/\">Claire Chase<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/internationales-musikinstitut.de\/de\/ferienkurse\/ueber\/musiker-dozenten\/lucas-fels\/\"> Lucas Fels<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/internationales-musikinstitut.de\/de\/ferienkurse\/ueber\/musiker-dozenten\/gunnhildur-einarsdottir\/\">Gunnhildur Einarsd\u00f3ttir<\/a>, with the collaboration of Giovanni Cestino.<\/p>\n<p>During the workshop, each of the three Sequenzas were discussed in depth, combining performance practice with the direct analysis of archival sources. The workshop was an occasion for reconsidering the relationship between performance practice and musicological research, as complementary and \u201capplied\u201d disciplines interacting with each other. In this sense, the corpus of Berio\u2019s Sequenzas offers a perfect \u201cworking environment\u201d for testing the longstanding issue of integration between theory and practice.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was opened on August 12, with a Performance-Lecture on <em>Gesti<\/em> for solo recorder (1966) (click <a href=\"https:\/\/internationales-musikinstitut.de\/de\/ferienkurse\/festival\/programm\/berio-gesti\/\">here<\/a>). This piece\u2014a sort of \u201cextra\u201d in the Sequenzas cycle\u2014was analyzed as a methodological case study to unpack some of the recurring issues the genesis, performance practice and publishing history of Berio\u2019s solo compositions. After that, the focus was on <em>Sequenza I<\/em> for flute (August 12), <em>Sequenza II<\/em> for harp (August 13), and <em>Sequenza XIV<\/em> for cello (August 14).
